Tybee Island One Fork At A Time

By David Barwick for Tybee Joy Vacations, Natural Retreats

Tybee Island one fork at a time

Fresh frozen Lemonade at Seaside Sweets!

If you are what you eat, you could be anything you want when you dine on Tybee Island one fork at a time.  You can choose from fresh seafood straight from our waters around Tybee or dive right into some of the best Mom style casseroles you’ll have set in front of you.  It’s kind of like the old saying, “She’s as country as a cornbread wedding cake” when it comes to home style cooking and I darest you challenge the other worldliness of the finest collection of chefs here against any in the world.  Now, there’s way too much to choose from to get a real good taste of Tybee in one day, so get ready to strap on a feed bag because I’ve got some great gastronomic suggestions for how to get it all in when you stay for a week.  Here’s your Tybee Diet and Workout Plan starting from the beginning.  Remember, you can eat as much as you want so long as you work it off.  Here’s how I’d spend day one.

Rise and shine and get in line.  Get up way before the sun and work up an appetite with a brisk morning stroll along the main beach.  The world-famous Breakfast Club is the place for breakfast lovers.  You’ll want to get there early because the line to get in stretches way down the block.  Now, bear in mind you can’t go wrong with anything you order, but here’s how I’d do it.  Country Fried Steak Breakfast!

It’s BIG, it’s fried crisp, it’s got lotsa peppercorn gravy! Two eggs any style, grits and toast. They butcher it, cube it and bread it right there.  Sometimes, I even add-on a decadent Belgian Waffle, to cut the sweet, ya know.

No, you do not head directly to the hammock, day bed or lounge chair after.  You haul butt back down the beach the same way you came (after this breakfast you might have to make two or three trips).  Yes, I know you’ll be parched and I’ve thought of just how to remedy that.  Belly up to the bar at Seaside Sweets for a fresh frozen Lemonade, hot or iced coffee and the most delicious fresh fruit smoothies that can’t be beat.  No, you cannot slurp up a fresh gelato.  You’ll just ruin your lunch I’ve got planned for you.  Be good and I might recommend an afternoon treat.

We’ll be starting our sea turtle nesting season, soon, so before heading back to your Natural Retreats with Tybee Joy Vacations and stop in to look and learn with the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.  Find out just how hazardous and unkempt a beach can be for nesting mommies and work the rest of that breakfast off by filling in any holes you find along the beach.  Next, reach-1-2-3 for every piece of trash you see.  What may seem like harmless litter becomes a death trap for nesting turtles and their nestlings.

For lunch, seat your fanny over at Fannie’s on the Beach.  From the menu, thumb over to the Specialties and order the Quesadillas.

Tybee’s Market at the Lighthouse

tybee's market at the lightouseThe sun is shining, the sand is dazzling and the coastal waves are calling you down!  This weekend it’s Tybee’s Market at the Lighthouse, so let’s rock the beach and shop!  There’s plenty of room for you to make a break for the coast and enjoy fabulous fresh seafood by Friday night, catch some rays and waves on Saturday and then hit the market at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Find something unique for yourself or that someone special.  There’ll be new vendors with some new and exciting items, not to mention all the regular vendors who will be returning with beautiful art work.  You can also shop for pottery, woodwork, jewelry, plants, candles, assorted bags and trinkets, baskets, art work, bamboo crafts, photography, vintage jewelry, initial art (design your own piece), honey, plants, handmade soaps, mosaic tile work, organic doggie treats and products, antique shabby chic and so much more.  Get in the groove with music provided by Shock Wave Entertainment.  As an added treat, the Tybee Garden Club will be there selling plants, too.

Now, your first bit of shopping couldn’t be easier.  Just go online or give us a call and you can select from our collection of Natural Retreats.  From small and cozy to big and WOW!  Which one of these would work best for you?

80th Annual Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens

80th annual savannah tour of homes Just like you, we’ve oohed and ahhed over photos for years and this weekend we’re taking the 80th Annual Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens!  It’s our chance to enter these beautiful homes and to be inspired by their fabulous gardens.  March 26-29, join us as we admire many of the special furnishings that have been treasured by families for generations, yet seldom seen by visitors.  Y’all know how gracious our Southern hostesses can be, so bring along a good appetite for more special events, as well as some of the best food and hospitality the South has to offer.

“Savannah has the largest urban landmark historic district in the United States. In this 2.5 square mile area, there is an astonishingly preserved genteel city encompassing the beauty, architecture and history of the old South. Savannah was founded in 1733 by General James Edward Oglethorpe whose colonial plan was based on a grid of residences and broad thoroughfares with spacious public squares at regular intervals. This design has blossomed into a gracious city whose downtown has been enhanced by more than fifty years of preservation activity. Twenty-two oak-canopied squares surrounded by lovely homes and churches give Savannah a character of its own.”  – Visit Savannah

Columbus Ships Sail Past Tybee

columbus ships sail past tybeeNext week will bring a special treat as the Columbus Ships sail past Tybee up the Savannah River to port.  On Tuesday, March 24, the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina,’ replicas of Columbus’ Ships, will open for visitors in Savannah. The ships will be docked at Rousakis Riverfront Plaza the rest of the week through early Monday morning March 30.  The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools.  Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The “Pinta” was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel sailing vessel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century. Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel,’ a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour.
